In the Midwest, we don't take elevation for granted, no matter how that elevation takes shape. Along the Mississippi River, bluffs provide a dramatic change in the horizon. One problem. The Mississippi isn't exactly in the neighborhood of Chicago. It forms the western border of the state, carving the border between Illinois and Iowa/Missouri.
However, it just so happens that I found my way to La Crosse, Wisconsin for the weekend, which sits right on the river. I was there to visit the Brenner family, good friends of mine from camp. Though the visit did not have a recreational focus, Terry found time to lead a quick hike up onto the bluffs, which served as a wonderful breath of fresh air.
